Cluster flies: harmless, but bothersome!
Spring is here and it’s starting to get warmer. That’s nice, but it also brings along bother with cluster flies.
Life stages
The cluster fly looks much like a usual fly. The cluster fly is a bit longer. The colour of the fly is brown-grey and its breast is covered in gold hairs. In the different life stages (egg-larvae-pop-adult), the cluster fly changes a lot. The females lay eggs under the ground, these eggs hatch within three days in the summer. After hatching, the larvae actively search for earthworms. Once they found one, they drill a hole in them and eat them from the inside. As soon as the worm died, the larvae will pop under the ground. It is common for cluster flies to have two generations per year, but if it is very hot in summer, they can also have as much as four. Adults feed with the nectar of flowers.
Lifestyle
The cluster fly thanks his name to the fact that they winter in swarms of possibly a thousand flies. They do this in the tops of buildings in covered places, like corners and cracks. In spring, when it’s slowly starting to lighten up and get warmer, the flies awake and are attracted by the light. They will mainly hang around the building they wintered in. After a couple of weeks they leave the building. The cluster flies can be very bothersome, because they are never alone, but always in a swarm. That is why we recommend getting rid of them by a professional in pest control.
Control
Cluster flies are harmless, but they can be very bothersome in big numbers. They sit on windows in swarms for example (because they are attracted by light). EWS Pest control is your professional in fighting the cluster fly. We do this by performing a seams and cracks treatment. This means that, in autumn, we spray an insecticide on every possible entrance in the top of the building. Consequently, flies that are looking for cover and try to get In, will be killed instantly. To prevent any fly from surviving, we always carry out a second treatment in spring. This way, the flies that come out after wintering are also killed.

Nice orders for EWS Wood preservation!
We recently extended our department wood preservation with fungus clean-up. Fungi and wood harming moulds can cause a lot of damage. Both financially and materially. That is why it is important to tackle and prevent this problem. Besides fungus clean-up we offer wood impregnation, hot air treatment, fumigation and polymer chemical formwork restoration. In doing this, we use the newest techniques.
EWS is going to carry out some nice orders soon, regarding wood preservation and fungus clean-up. Among other things, we are going to treat a wooden roof framework of a farm in Groningen against woodworm. We are going to do this by impregnating with a woodworm killing substance.
We will also do a fungus clean-up in to buildings in Amsterdam. We are going to replace a floor that is infested by fungi and we are going to impregnate a wooden roof to prevent fungi.
Also we will start a project in Haarlem. The floors will be replaced by renovation floors. First we are going to inspect and advice in relation to impairment due to fungi and woodworm. And lastly, we will tackle fungi in Den Haag!
Some nice orders are on their way. Do you also have problems with moist, fungi or mould in wood? Or are you dealing with wood harming insects? Do not hesitate to contact us. Would you like to have more information? Go to: EWS fungus clean-up.
3 Golden tips against mice (and rats)!
It is getting colder outside and that means mice and rats are looking for shelter in warm buildings. The unwanted rodents are the cause of nuisance. They can cause damage to buildings due to nibbling for example. Besides that, they are a health hazard because of the germs they are carrying. Nuisance can be prevented. There are things that you can do to prevent unwanted visits from happening. We provide you with 3 tips!
- Hygiene: make sure that food is placed outside of range. Mice are constantly looking for food. Store food in sealed containers for example. Also make sure that there are no remaining food residues. Give mice a hard time accessing food.
- Architectural: mice are small and can get through the smallest holes. That is why you should make sure that your home or office doesn’t have a passageway bigger than half a centimetre. In addition, make sure that all doors close for 100% horizontally and
vertically. You can close ventilation openings with stainless steel mesh.
- Personal behaviour: nuisance due to mice and rats can be prevented by changing your behaviour. Make sure that you close all doors and windows when leaving your home or office. By doing this, it is extra hard for rodents to enter the building. Also make sure that you don’t leave behind food residues or waste.
Extra tip against rats:
Rats are often hiding in bushes. That is why you should make sure that plants and bushes don’t grow against your home or office building. This way you’re giving rats a hard time entering the building.
EWS is expanding with fungus clean-up!
Badly ventilated crawl spaces and basements can facilitate the development of wood harming fungi, due to long-term humidity.
This results in a lot of damage, financially and materially. Moreover, fungi and moulds are detrimental to our health. Because of these reasons, it is important to control these fungi and moulds.
EWS Group offers several adequate solutions for this. Want to know more?

New regulations regarding the use of rodenticides against rats and mice
From 2023, poisonous rodenticides against rats and mice are only allowed to be used by certified professionals like EWS Group. The possibility for individuals to buy and use these rodenticides is dismissed within the new regulations. Rodenticides are only to be used within Integrated Pest Management (IPM) by a professional like EWS Pest Control. These rules apply from 2023 for both in- and outside, and only as a last resort. The reason for this is that rodenticides are poisonous and difficult to degrade, which makes them detrimental for other animals. You can find more information about this in a press release of the Ctgb: https://www.ctgb.nl/actueel/nieuws/2018/10/02/middelen-tegen-ratten-en-muizen-alleen-binnen-ipm-systeem
Cluster flies, French field wasps and garden ants.
Spring has started! The temperature is higher; the days are longer and we all are more outside. Also, you can find more and more insects which are awaken from there hibernation.
Examples of these are the cluster flies, French field wasps and garden ants.
Cluster flies:
Cluster flies are found on the in- and outside of buildings during the first warm days of the year, where they hibernated. They will come through the cracks and crevices of the buildings in large numbers, which often may cause inconvenience.
What can you do to reduce the inconvenience by cluster flies to a minimum?
- Place screens in open windows and doors
- Placing small grills in front of vents in the wall
French field wasps:
The French field wasps is a social wasp that increasingly is signaled in the Netherlands.
They have a social life style and live in a nation of mostly less than one hundred individuals.
The big difference between the French field wasps and “lemonade” wasps that we know is that they are having an open nest. Therefore, they are good to observe.
Often they build multiple nests next to each other. The number of nests which is made can be as much as 10 nests within a radius of 5 meters. The French field wasp has a sting and can be stabbing like another wasp’s species.
The Queen of this wasp species, different from other wasp species, are as large as the workers and therefore difficult to distinguish from the rest of the wasps.
What do we advise with wasp’s inconvenience?
We always advise at first to be ensure that the species are named (determined) so that they can successfully be removed.
Garden ants:
The first garden ants are already signaled. This are usually the Black Garden Ants or the Glossy Wood Ants. In their search for food ants can be entering your home or business building. Once the sweetness is found, there will be setting out a track by the workers.
The track, called ant street, will be followed by other workers with all the inconvenience that entails.
What can you do to reduce the inconvenience by ants?
- Ensure spilled sweetness is immediately cleared
- Avoid overflowing bins and make sure that foods are covered
